Description of the Roaccutane:

Roaccutane contains isotretinoin that is the substance related to vitamin A and is one of the important groups of medicine called retinoids mainly for the treatments of acne.

• Roaccutane is used to treat severe types of acne such as nodular or conglobate acne, or also of the age only after puberty. You will use the Roaccutane when your acne has not got better with anti-acne treatments that include antibiotics and other skin treatments.
• Roaccutane treatments are preferred to be supervised by the professional dermatologist that is a doctor specialized in the treatment of any type of skin problem.

Pharmacodynamics of Roaccutane:

• It produces its effects through altering the progress through the process of the cell cycle, cell differentiation, survival, and apoptosis.
• These actions reduce the sebum production preventing the blockage of pores and the growth of acne-causing bacteria.
• They effectively reduce sebum production. It has a little affinity for retinol-binding proteins (RBPs) and retinoic acid nuclear receptors (RAPs).
• It binds to the RAR-γ receptor, which is suspended to be a part of the action of acne treatment.
• It induces apoptosis in the sebocytes, leading to a decrease in sebum production.
• It also reduces the formation of comedones by reducing hyper-keratinization through an unknown mechanism.
• It does not directly kill the bacteria but it does reduce the size of sebum ducts and makes the microenvironment less hospitable to acne-causing bacteria.
• It may also increase the immune mechanism and alter the chemotaxis of monocytes to reduce the inflammation.

Uses of the steroid Roaccutane:

• The medication of Roaccutane is used to treat severe cystic acne which is also known as nodular acne, it has not been responded to other treatments e.g., benzoyl peroxide or clindamycin applied to the skin or tetracycline or minocycline taken by mouth.
• It belongs to the class of drugs that are known as retinoids.
• It works by decreasing facial oil e.g., sebum production.
• High amounts of sebum can lead to severe acne.
• It is left untreated, severe acne may cause permanent scarring.

Women who are pregnant:

This medication has serious harm to an unborn baby that’s why it is said to be teratogenic.

It can cause serious abnormalities of an unborn baby’s brain, face, ear, eye, heart and certain glands e.g., thymus gland and parathyroid gland.

It also creates a situation of miscarriage more often.

This may happen even if Roaccutane is taken only for a short period of time during pregnancy.
